You’re not alone in your search for toothache relief. Tooth pain creates complications that ruin your day, week and so on. If left untreated, severe health issues may arise. There are few pains as nagging and painful to ignore as a lingering toothache. That’s why it’s critical to visit your dentist immediately for a comprehensive dental oral examination to fix the problem area.

Toothache Symptoms

Toothaches are a constant nagging pain of one or more teeth. This little area of your body affects you in significant ways when it hurts. With a toothache, many suffer intense, throbbing pain, painful eating, and jaw discomfort. These toothache symptoms make daily activities a struggle to complete. Unfortunately, toothache pain only worsens until you fix the problem causing your pain.

Regardless of the severity, you need to see a dentist right away. The more decay you allow to build, the worse the pain becomes. Sometimes an aching, decaying tooth even cracks or splits open. In this case, your damaged tooth needs proper dental care immediately.

How Dentists Provide Toothache Relief

Your dentist first examines your mouth to identify the aching tooth. The dentist can fill a small cavity after cleaning it out and clearing all signs of infection. This sometimes involves drilling into your tooth to remove all decay.

If the decay has made your tooth structurally unsound, your dentist drills the decay away and shapes it for a crown. The crown fits over the whole tooth, protecting it while reinforcing its strength and stabilizing it. A crown enables you to keep the tooth in your mouth, instead of having it extracted.

If the tooth decay has reached nerves, the dentist needs to remove nerve tissue through root canal therapy. Your dentist drills into your tooth, remove the nerve tissue and saves the tooth to remain in your mouth.

What Can I Do for Tooth Pain?

Dental care is the only option for a permanent recovery. You cannot cure your problem at home, but you can find toothache relief until you see a dentist.

You can apply an ice pack or bag of frozen peas to the outside of your jaw for pain relief. Over-the-counter pain relievers also help. Applying clove oil to your aching tooth or covering it with a piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax may also help. Also, covering the damaged tooth relieves sensitivity.

Of course, prevention is the best way to keep toothache pain from affecting your life. Proper daily oral hygiene is essential, as is visiting your dentist at least once every six months. Your six-month routine cleanings and exams at the dentist go a long way to find problems early, such as tooth decay. Between professional cleanings, you need to brush your teeth twice daily, floss daily and use an antimicrobial mouth rinse.
